One thing we understood in the early days of working with runners is that most runners don’t know how to run… they simply run! Runners don’t really understand what their gait looks like or how it impacts the efficiency of their running economy.
While there is no “perfect” way to run, there are about a thousand ways to run incorrectly – all of which often lead to injury. Furthermore, running economy contributes to 30% of the performance differences between runners of similar abilities.

- Providing Feedback
There is no one perfect way to run. Our goal isn’t to make every person run in exactly the same way, but rather to focus on correcting and improving key points in each individual’s approach which provide the most benefit for their running economy and performance in the long run.
When these characteristics are identified (think running gait category), we then focus on motor learning and providing specific external cues and drills to help improve running form. We recommend form practice while running 2-3x per week for initial gait re-training, and subsequently 1x per week for maintaining the changes.
We want the runners to feel the change in their running gait. Remember, many runners don’t know how they run, so when we provide obtainable feedback, it creates buy-in and a commitment to improving stride mechanics. Live feedback can come in the form of feel (ex. what is the pain level?), wearable tech, video or photos, and 3D analysis. Oftentimes, seeing runners for reassessments every 3-4 months keeps things moving in the right direction for long term performance.
